Mark was born in Paris, France. He is the son of a West Virginia State trooper who later turned Baptist minister. So first Mark was a criminal, and then he became a sinner.
He won his first Golden Gloves at the age of 14 and later earned money in college by fighting in Tough Man contests and donating plasma. He earned a degree in art and began teaching. After the sudden death of one of his fellow teachers, Mark began writing songs, and the songs kept coming. For Mark, Rock & Roll is an assertion of life's energy and a way of expressing the human condition.
